Aronia melanocarpaTreatment and Antioxidant Status in Selected Tissues in Wistar Rats

Abstract: Aronia juice is considered to be a source of compounds with high antioxidative potential. We conducted a study on the impact of compounds in the Aronia juice on oxidative stress in plasma and brain tissues. The influence of Aronia juice on oxidative stress parameters was tested with the use of a model with a high content of fructose and nonsaturated fats. Therefore, the activity of enzymatic (catalase, CAT, and paraoxonase, PON) and nonenzymatic (thiol groups, SH, and protein carbonyl groups, PCG) oxidative st… Show more

“…Available exploratory preclinical research data on AM health effects [11][12][13][14] support our fi ndings. Thus, consumption of aronia juice or chokeberry extract incorporated in the standard diet, has shown health-promoting properties in experimental rodent models, including rat models of arterial hypertension [13], hyperlipidemia [1], metabolic syndrome [14], and glucose metabolic disorders which preferentially lead to diabetes [15].…”

Additionally, the pretreatment with aronia in laboratory rats has shown anti-oxidative effects in the case of diet- [12,37] and chemically [11] induced oxidative stress. Observed benefi cial effects are attributed to the bioactivity of polyphenols.…”

“…Proanthocyanidins form complexes with proteins and polysaccharides (van Boxtel and others ). Anthocyanins have strong antioxidative properties (Wu and others ; Jakobek and others ; Bräunlich and others ; Francik and others ). They are present in the external parts of the fruit skin and are responsible for the color of chokeberries (Zhao and others ; Symonowicz and others ).…”

“…Chokeberries are characterized by strong antioxidative properties connected with the high content of polyphenolic compounds, especially anthocyanins (Jakobek and others ; Denev and others ; Bräunlich and others ; Francik and others ). Moreover, the antioxidative action of the berries is connected with the presence of vitamins C and E, β‐carotene, and minerals such as zinc, copper, and selenium (Table ; Valcheva‐Kuzmanova and others ).…”
