I and S-type plutonism on Serifos (W-Cyclades, Greece)

Kinematic reconstructions and magmatic evolution illuminating crustal and mantle dynamics of the eastern Mediterranean region since the late Cretaceous

“…Migmatites associated with S-type granites have also been described in the cores of these metamorphic domes [Jansen and Schuiling, 1976;Lister et al, 1984;Okay and Satır, 2000b;Vanderhaeghe, 2004;Bozkurt et al, 2010;Kruckenberg et al, 2011;Laurent et al, 2015;Beaudoin et al, 2015]. These intrusions are exposed in the footwall of major detachments where they show strong foliation with extensional kinematic indicators as well as cataclastic zones at the contact with the detachments [Faure and Bonneau, 1988;Gessner et al, 2001a;Iglseder et al, 2009;Denèle et al, 2011;Rabillard et al, 2015]. They were emplaced first in the northeastern Menderes massif with the Egrigöz and Koyunoba plutons both dated at ~21 Ma (UPb crystallization ages on zircon) in the footwall of the Simav detachment [Ring and Collins, 2005].…”

“…The molybdenite-bearing Kimmeria granodiorite was considered to have formed by dehydration melting of the lower crust without any contribution from mantle components [87,88], whereas the Lavrion granodiorite is regarded to have a mantle origin with a contribution of a crustal felsic component [89,90]. The source materials for the leucocratic, S-type Axioupolis and Serifos granites are considered to also have a crustal anatectic origin [91,92]. The low Re-content of molybdenite in the Mo-W-enriched Lavrion, Kimmeria, Axioulopis and Serifos systems is consistent with the reducing nature of mineralizing fluids as proposed by the experimental work of [93], who suggested that reducing fluids containing sulfur have a lower capacity for transporting rhenium.…”

Quartz Megacrysts in Greece: Mineralogy and Environment of Formation

“…However, the most typical crystals encountered are the normal and inverse sceptres that consist of rock crystal, smoky quartz or amethyst. On Seriphos Island milky Tessin quartz crystals were deposited in extensional sigmoidal fissures developed in the Seriphos leucogranite (Iglseder et al, 2009). On the island of Ios colourless and smoky (close to morion) prismatic quartz crystals have been deposited in quartz veins in orthogneisses (Henjes-Kunst & Kreuzer, 1982), where smoky quartz sceptres are also found.…”
