Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in a rural adult population in southern Thailand

Abstract: The prevalence of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans isolates was examined in a rural population of southern Thailand. Sixty individuals aged 30-39 and 50-59 years were randomly selected from a group of 363 persons, living in four villages, who had been clinically examined previously. A subgingival plaque sample was taken with a curette from the mesial aspect of the two upper and lower first molars. Each sample was dispersed in 3.3 ml of VMGA III transport medium and spread onto Trypticase Soy Broth with Bac… Show more

“…Not only various techniques but also ethnic and/or geographical factors may partly explain different observations. For example, the present and above-mentioned Western carriage rates of A. actinomycetemcomitans are seemingly low compared to much higher rates reported for rural populations in Far Eastern countries (6,21,28).…”

“…In Europe, Sanz et al (14) found a significant difference between the presence of Aa in periodontal patients from Spain (2.3%) and The Netherlands (23.3%). Dahlen et al (11) and Mombelli et al (15) found prevalences of 88% and 63%, in Southern Thailand and China, respectively. These authors suggest that Aa is a common constituent of the normal microbiota in these populations.…”

“…These characteristics have a relationship with both the prevalence of periodontal diseases and the pathogens related to them (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Furthermore, studies about the transmission of periodontopathogens are valuable to elucidate its significance as a risk factor for the establishment of periodontal diseases and to search available ways for their prevention (16).…”

“…However, the prevalence and proportion of these species in the subgingival microbiota may vary (15,26). For instance, evidence has demonstrated a lower prevalence of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in the European and American than in the Asian population (1,4,9). Umeda et al (36) also identified race or ethnicity as a potential risk factor for harboring oral A. actinomycetemcomitans.…”

“…Many studies have attempted to clarify the relationship between a specific bacterium and/or a group of microorganisms and the pathogenesis of periodontitis. These data were originated in several parts of the world, including Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America (5,8,9,15,23,25,26,31,33). A general finding is that, even in different populations, the same periodontal species are found in sites or individuals with periodontitis.…”
