“…This is reassuring in that it strengthens the conclusion that blood glucose concentrations derived from captive birds can be used with confidence in making generic inferences about wild birds. We do not know with certainty how such high blood glucose concentrations can be tolerated by birds, but it is believed that endogenous anti-oxidants prevent oxidative stress and tissue damage occurring (Cohen et al, 2007) and avian erythrocytes are more resistant to glucose diffusion than those of mammals (Shields et al, 1964). Braun and Sweazea (2008) showed that the significant negative relationship between P Glu and body mass among bird species was described by the formula: P Glu ¼ 15:3 À 0:44 * log Mass Applying this formula, the ratio of calculated/ predicted P Glu was 1.31 -1.37 for Noisy miners, 1.13 -1.14 for Grey-breasted white-eyes, 1.09 -1.13 for Red wattlebirds, 0.95 -1.01 for Spotted doves and 0.82 -0.87 for Welcome swallows.…”

“…The integrity of the metabolic function of gut biopsies in vitro was verified by observing CO 2 production from glucose [29] and leucine incorporation into protein [30] as linear processes with time for periods of 1 h. Four or five chicks were killed at each time point, and all assays in the experiment were performed on each chick. Rachitic chicks that received only the vehicle served as controls and are referred to as the 0 hour group, No effect of intubation or administration of the vehicle on any of the assays was observed in these experiments.…”

“…Yet, in the chicken, negligible amounts of glucose are taken u p a n d metabolized by the mature peripheral erythrocytes (Rubinstein and Denstedt 1953;Shields et al 1964) o r ABBREVIATIONS: DMEM, Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium; MEM, minimal essential medium; PEG, polyethylene glycol; BSA, bovine serum albumin; NBMPR, S-(p-nitrobenzy1)-6-thioinosine; DM, difference from the mean.…”
