Hysteroscopic Findings between 2010-2012 at Obstetric and Gynecology Department of Celal Bayar University

Abstract

Objective: We have aimed to analyse retrospectively hysteroscopic interventions performed at a university hospital in the last three years. Materials and methods: A total of 211 patients who had applied to Celal Bayar University Obstetrics and Gynecology department and whose records were complete were retrospectively analysed. Sociodemographic variables, indications, hysteroscopy findings and complications were recorded. A normal hysteroscopy result meant a normal cavity with normal anatomy and measures, a normal endometrium stood for a normal endometrium without polyp, leiomyoma or other space occupying lesion. Results: The mean age of the patients was 37.94 and ranged between 18 and 68. Diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy was performed in 79 (37.4%) and 132 (62.6%) patients, respectively. The indications for hysteroscopy were infertility (31.3%), endometrial poylp (26.5%), endometrial thickness (3.8%), abnormal uterine bleeding (11.8%), uterine anomaly (10.9%), leiomyoma (6.2%), dilocation of intrauterine device (7.1%) and chronic pelvic pain (2.4%). Removal of endometrial polyp (31.8%), uterin septum resection (13.7%), removal of IUD (6.6%) were the frequent interventions made. In 2 patients complication of uterine rupture occured (0.94%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive and negative predictive value for the detection of endometrial polyp were 73%, 91%, 87.5% and 88.8%, respectively. Conclusion: Hysteroscopy is a convenient mthod for diagnostic and operative procedures in gynecological indications. The most frequent indications in our report are for infertility and endometrial polyps and the most ferquent findings and interventions were normal uterine cavity and polyp resection. The rate of complications was very low and consistent with literature.
