Hypoxia and hypoxia response-associated molecular markers in esophageal cancer: A systematic review

Abstract: Evaluation of tumor micro-environmental conditions, such as intratumoral hypoxia, is important to predict treatment outcome and efficacy. Promising non-invasive imaging-techniques have been suggested to assess tumor hypoxia and hypoxia-associated molecular responses. However, extensive validation in EC is lacking. Hypoxia-associated markers that are independent prognostic factors could potentially provide targets for novel treatment strategies to improve treatment outcome. For personalized hypoxia-guided treat… Show more

“…Direct imaging of oxygen using 19 F MRI or blood oxygen level dependent MRI (BOLD MRI) is also possible, however with their own limitations. In the case of 19 F MRI, local injections into the tumor are necessary while in BOLD MRI the signal can be influenced by factors other than hypoxia, resulting in low specificity [93] . A promising MRI technique proposed by O’Connor and colleagues is oxygen enhanced MRI (OE-MRI), which is less invasive and potentially more specific [94] , [95] .…”

“…CA9 is not detected in most normal tissues, but its expression in various cancers indicates hypoxic tumors and poor treatment response 57 . Glut1 is one of hypoxia biomarkers and associated with poor prognosis in various cancers [58][59][60] . Glut1 is HIF-1 target genes and enhanced in cells exposed to intermittent hypoxia in colon cancer 61 .…”

“…Hypoxia is associated with cancer invasion, angiogenesis, distant metastasis and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) . Many studies have shown that hypoxia‐inducible factor 1α (HIF‐1α) is correlated with cancer progression and metastasis . Many studies have suggested that propofol regulates cancer development via the HIF‐1α pathway.…”

“…44 Many studies have shown that hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1 ) is correlated with cancer progression and metastasis. 45 Many studies have suggested that propofol regulates cancer development via the HIF-1 pathway. Takabuchi et al proved that propofol inhibited HIF-1 protein synthesis which was dependent on the cellular oxygen tension.…”
