Hypolipidemic Effects of Andrographolide and Neoandrographolide in Mice and Rats

Abstract: Andrographolide (AND) and neoandrographolide (NEO) are the diterpenoids from the Andrographis paniculata (Acanthaceae). It is reported the diterpenoids exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the hypolipidemic effect of AND and NEO in hyperlipidemic mice induced by 75% yolk emulsion and in hyperlipidemic rats induced by high fat emulsion, respectively. The results showed that the levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol (TC) and low‐density lipoprotein choles… Show more

“…The hypolipidemic activity of AND and AND‐SLNs (freeze‐dried powder) was carried out according to the reported method . One hundred and eight male mice (weight 20 ± 2 g) were fasted overnight before the experiment with free access to water and divided randomly into nine groups with 12 mice each group.…”

“…Andro is a labdane diterpenoid which contains a γ-lactone ring connected to a central decalin ring system. Andro has multiple health promotional properties, including antiinflammatory (Abu-Ghefreh, Canatan, & Ezeamuzie, 2009), antiplatelet aggregation (Lu et al, 2012), hypolipidemic (Yang, Shi, Wang, & Wang, 2013), and neuroprotective effects (Yang & Song, 2014).…”

“…Regarding hypolipidemic effects, Andro was found to reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in mice and rat models (Yang et al, 2013). Statins inhibit the functioning of the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, leading to the inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis that is ordinarily carried out via the mevalonate pathway.…”

“…Andrographolide and neoandrographolide have shown potent hypolipidemic effects in mice, reducing the serum total triglyceride, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, without significant liver damage, which may support the use of Andrographis in traditional Chinese medicine to protect the cardiovascular system (Yang et al 2013). Extracts and andrographolide have antioedema and analgesic activities (Lin et al 2009).…”
