Hypolipidemic and Anti‐Obesity Effects of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Brazilian Red Propolis in a Rodent Model of Dyslipidemia

Abstract: The widespread use of Brazilian red propolis extract promotes an increased production rate in the Northeast region of Brazil, with an impressive economic turnover for the region. The rational use of the hydroalcoholic extract of red propolis (HERP) raises the question about its value against obesity. In this work, the aim is to evaluate the anti-obesity effect of HERP in rats submitted to hyperlipid dietary (HLD) supplementation. HERP extraction yield is 17.46% (m/v). The major chemical components of HERP are … Show more

“…Similar findings were reported in earlier research on the effect of natural products and extracts on lipid metabolism. 46,47 Besides, it is actually known that hypertriglyceridemia is closely related to an increase in body weight, liver steatosis, and abdominal obesity, which lead to insulin resistance and then hyperglycemia, constituting the onset of diabetes mellitus and CVD. 47,48 Our research showed that the Triton WR-1339 injection increased body weight, visceral adipose tissue mass, triglyceridemia, glycemia and liver lipid content; this is in accordance with previous studies.…”

“…Hydroalcholic extract of Brazilian red propolis had been reported to effect a hypolipidemic change in a rodent model of dyslipidemia. The extract minimised the effect of a hyperlipidic diet on murine body weight parameters and abdominal fat accumulation (Prata et al, 2022).…”

“…Research on rat models of diabetes or dyslipidemia has documented the hypolipidemic and lipid peroxidation effects of PEE [ 79 , 80 , 81 ]. Propolis’s ability to inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol by lowering the level of β-Hydroxy β-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase protein in the liver has been identified as its mechanism of action [ 82 ].…”
