Hypogonadal men with type 2 diabetes mellitus have smaller bone size and lower bone turnover

Abstract: Among hypogonadal men, those with T2D have higher BMD, poorer bone geometry and relatively suppressed bone turnover. Studies with larger sample size are needed to verify our findings and possible even greater risk for fractures among hypogonadal diabetic men.

“…The bone area at the proximal femur and femoral shaft are most relevant for hip fracture risk which is the most devastating fracture. T2DM was associated with a smaller cross-sectional area at the tibia and radius (men and women n = 1069) [ 10 ], smaller cortical area of the tibia (25 postmenopausal women with T2DM and 25 controls) [ 24 ] and lower endosteal and periosteal circumferences and total area at the tibia (hypogonadal males n = 105) [ 25 ]. In addition to measuring bone area at peripheral sites, these studies were conducted in relatively small and specific populations, potentially restricting the generalizability of the results.…”

“…This study includes 105 subjects who participated in a single-arm clinical trial (gov Identifier: NCT01378299) investigating the pharmacogenetics of response to T therapy in HG men [ 11 , 12 ]. This particular report consists of the data collected in the first 6 months of the study.…”

“…The study population was divided into 4 categories based on baseline E2 levels (pg/mL): (1) <10; (2) 10.0–15.9; (3) 16.0–19.9; (4) ≥20.0 (first analysis) to establish the impact of different E2 levels on body composition, subcutaneous adipose tissue’s ESR1 expression at baseline, and in response to T therapy. As reported in Section 2.1 , this is a secondary analysis of a study investigating the pharmacogenetics of response to testosterone therapy among HG men [ 11 , 12 ]. Original sample power calculation was performed in order to detect significant differences in the primary outcome of the main project.…”

“…type I procollagen-N-propeptide (PINP)). Hypogonadal men with type 2 diabetes have smaller bone size and lower bone turn over 8 . We conducted this analysis to study the effect of soy isoflavone supplementation on BTMs in men with T2DM and low testosterone levels (<12 nmol/L).…”
