Hypoglycemia: An Excuse for Poor Glycemic Control?

Abstract: IN BRIEF Although long-term maintenance of normoglycemia can prevent the onset and delay the progression of the microvascular complications in diabetes, a large percentage of diabetic patients continue to have poorly controlled glucose levels. The risk of hypoglycemia is a real obstacle to achieving glucose targets in type 1 diabetes. However, risk of severe hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes is minimal and should not be used as an excuse for failing to achieve glycemic goals. This article reviews … Show more

“…Hypoglycaemia is the most frequent complication of diabetes and occurs more frequently in patients on intensive insulin regimens. 3 The conventional risk factors for hypoglycaemia are based on the premise that absolute or relative insulin excess is the sole determinant of risk. 4 Hypoglycaemia is usually the result of a mismatch between insulin action, food ingestion and energy expenditure.…”

“…There has been a disagreement about the correlation of hypothyroidism and hypoglycaemia 153, 154 . Hypothyroidism is thought to cause hypoglycaemia through the reduction of gluconeogenesis in skeletal muscle and in adipose tissue and impairment of glycogenolysis 155, 156 …”
