A new species of Eufriesea Cockerell (Hymenoptera, Apidae) from northeastern Brazil. Eufriesea pyrrhopyga sp. nov. a short-tongued Eufriesea is described as a new species. It can be easily recognized for its predominantly violet lower frons and thorax, violet tergum 1 contrasting with the strong reddish coloration on the lateral portions of terga 2 to 4 and on entire terga 5 and 6, and head pubescence with contrasting colors, white on the lower two-thirds of the face and black on upper frons and vertex. This new species, collected in Recife (Pernambuco, Brazil), apparently is restricted to the Pernambuco endemic center, and seems to be highly endangered.
Uma nova espécie de Eufriesea Cockerell (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Euglossina) do nordeste brasileiro. Eufriesea pyrrhopyga sp. nov., uma Eufriesea de língua curta, é descrita como espécie nova. Esta espécie pode ser facilmente reconhecida pela cor predominantemente violeta na região inferior da fronte e no tórax; primeiro tergo violeta, contrastando com a coloração avermelhada intensa nas porções laterais dos tergos 2 à 4 e nos tergos 5 e 6; e pela pilosidade da cabeça com cores contrastantes, com pêlos claros nos dois terços inferiores da face e escuros na região superior da fronte e no vértice. Esta nova espécie, coletada em Recife, (Pernambuco, Brasil) está aparentemente restrita ao Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco, e parece correr um sério risco de extinção

Ingoldian fungi play an important ecological role by active participation in the decomposition of submerged leaves in aquatic ecosystems. These fungi produce conidia that are filiform, tetraradiate, multiradiate, scolecoid or sigmoid, which aid in the adaptation and dispersal in freshwater habitats. Despite their important ecological role in freshwater there have been no taxonomic and distributional studies of these fungi in the Brazilian Amazon. The aim of this study was to report new records of Ingoldian fungi to Americas, Brazil and Brazilian Amazon region. The fungal specimens were obtained from natural foam, found on the surface of streams in the ''Reserva Ducke'' (municipality of Manaus) and the ''Balnea ´rio Marupiara'' (municipality of Presidente Figueiredo) in Amazonas state, Brazil. The foam samples were transferred to slides and completely evaporated at room temperature. Lactic acid was added to the slides and covered using a glass cover slip and sealed with nail polish. Seventeen taxa were recorded. All identified taxa are new records: one new to the Americas (Tricladium curvisporum Descals), three new to Brazil (Condylospora flexuosa Nawawi and Kuthub., C. spumigena Nawawi and Dwayaangam cornuta Descals), and 13 new to the Brazilian Amazon region. Our study provides baseline data on the species composition of Ingoldian fungi from the Brazilian Amazon region, thereby enhancing the knowledge of aquatic mycology in this biodiversity hotspot. Descriptions, illustrations, geographical distribution patterns and comments are presented for all observed species.

Biodiversity of aquatic environments in a peri-urban Atlantic Forest protected remnant: a checklist

We present a checklist for the aquatic biodiversity from two reservoirs within a PPBio (Biodiversity Research Program) site in a peri-urban forest fragment, the Dois Irmãos State Park (PEDI), in Pernambuco, Brazil. We obtained the data via extensive field collection and information from a specialized literature survey. We recorded 397 species in 156 families; the animal was the most abundant group (140 species) followed by fungi taxa (103), periphyton (69), aquatic macrophytes (44), and terrestrial plants in flooded areas (41). This review reflects different sample efforts toward selected groups and allows the definition of a long-term protocol for guiding new research based on the identified knowledge gaps revealed. Future ecological research should address the influence of the trophic state of the reservoirs, as well as the effects of competitive exclusion and predation on the long-term viability of the local diversity.
