Hypertrophy of the rat urinary bladder following reduction of its functional volume

Abstract: The present experiment has been designed t o find out i f the bladder can compensate f o r a r t i f i c i a l a l t e r a t i o n s i n i t s storage capacity while the r a t e of urine production remains unchanged. can s t o r e as much as 1% of t h e i r body weight of urine i n the bladder, although the average amount urinated i s about one-third t h a t much. Preliminary studies have shown t h a t rats W e therefore contrivedThe r e s u l t s indicate t h a t the bladder does accommodate t o a 121

“…Gabella 1975, Johansson 1975. The urinary bladder hypertrophies following injection of paraffine into the bladder lumen (Peterson, Goss & Atryzek 1974). Muscle strips from guinea pig bladders hypertrophied by this procedure have been found to develop less maximal active force than strips from untreated bladders.…”

“…In the present study, it was investigated whether hypertrophy as such would sensitize the bladder to parasympathomimetics. The presence of a paraffin bolus innavesically, serving as space filler, has been shown to cause bladder distension and a marked increase in bladder weight due to thickening of the muscle layer (Peterson et al 1974). We have now examined the in vztro responses of such hypertrophied urinary bladders Correspondence : Dr Jorgen Ekstrom, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Lund, Solvegatan 19, S-223 62 Lund, Sweden.…”
