Hypertension Status and Associations with Self-Rated Health and General Practitioner Health Seeking in a Rural Australian Cohort

Abstract: Hypertension is the most frequently managed condition by Australian general practitioners (GP). Knowledge of hypertension and blood pressure (BP) values may motivate individuals to seek GP management. Our study aims to determine the associations of knowledge of BP values, BP perception, GP health seeking, and self-rated health (SRH) in a rural population. Two-hundred and seventy-eight (278) residents responded to the health survey on socio-demographic profile, medical history, BP knowledge and perception, SRH,… Show more

“…Despite initial scepticism, SRH is today known as a valid and reliable measure among patients without cognitive impairment. Moreover, it is a strong predictor of healthcare seeking, morbidity, mortality and frequent use of hospital services ( 3 ). Especially poor SRH (PSRH) showed a strong association with an increased risk of mortality, even after adjustment for covariates such as comorbidity ( 4 ).…”

“…The prevalence of elevations in blood pressure in Australian hospitals is currently unknown, in contrast to international studies 1,2 . The awareness of elevated blood pressure among inpatients has not been addressed in manner comparable to that of hypertension within the community 3 . There is also limited evidence to guide management of such elevations, particularly in the absence of signs and symptoms of target organ damage 4 .…”

“…For instance, in a study conducted on Chinese people, there was a substantial link between controlled blood pressure (BP) and excellent SRH (8). Furthermore, poor control of HTN and suboptimal SRH score in Australian patients were associated with a higher frequency of visiting general practitioners monthly (14). Although SRH's determinants have been evaluated in some nations; studies are scarce regarding SRH and its determinants in hypertensive patients in Iran.…”
