Hypertension Secondary to Renal Artery Occlusive Disease

Abstract: Historically, the awareness of renal artery narrowing as a curable cause of hypertension has evolved gradually, highlighted especially by Goldblatt and Poutasse. The increasing use of renal arteriography over the past 8 years in this hospital has yielded a total of 70 patients with renal artery abnormalities out of 110 hypertensive patients examined. In order to select the hypertensive patients most likely to have demonstrable arterial lesions, certain indications for arteriography were used. Most us… Show more

“…Patients with critical renal artery stenosis may have abdominal murmurs/bruits produced by an accelerated blood circulation in renal arteries. Prevalence of abdominal bruits in patients with angiographically proven renal stenosis varies between 78% 4 and 87% 5 . The sensitivity and specificity of systolic and diastolic abdominal bruits is 39% and 99%, respectively 6 .…”

“…The presence of a bruit, or murmur, found by abdominal auscultation can indicate the presence of RAS, and auscultation has historically been used as a test for RAS [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. The theoretical argument is that murmurs caused by RAS arise due to the pressure gradient across the stenotic lesion.…”
