Hyperspectral Imaging of Macroinvertebrates—a Pilot Study for Detecting Metal Contamination in Aquatic Ecosystems

Abstract: The applicability of spectral analysis in detection of freshwater metal contamination was assessed by developing and testing a novel hyperspectral imaging (HSI) application for aquatic insect larvae (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae). Larvae were first exposed to four different cadmium (Cd) concentrations: 0, 1, 10 and 100 μg L⁻ 1 for 96 h. Individual larvae were then preserved in ethanol, inspected with microscopy for the number of anomalies in larval gills, and imaged by hyperspectral camera operating with waveba… Show more

“…It can also contribute to identifying the water pollution around courses and bodies and consequent degradation of water-related ecosystems that might raise due to usage of agricultural chemicals that seep into nearby water system. Furthermore, drone application can also observe serious soil degradation, which threatens plant productivity [136].…”

“…Excessive fertilizer application can pollute the environment, but insufficient fertilizer application to replenish nitrogen and phosphorus lost via intense cropping can cause deterioration of soil fertility [3]. Furthermore, substantial soil deterioration is posing the ecosystem to reduce the productivity of many soils [4]. In addition to the environmental effect, the health risks associated with chemical usage in agriculture must be taken into account.…”
