“…Although this proposal was almost immediately thought by many to be erroneous on a number of persuasive grounds, it was nonetheless widely accepted and gave rise to the names ‘Grawitz tumour’ and ‘hypernephroma,’ which were used for renal cortical carcinomas for many decades. Although their usage was fading, these names can still be found in the literature more than 50 years after Oberling et al ., in 1960, discovered brush borders of microvilli on the surfaces of the cells in these tumours, which was proof that the tumours arise from the epithelium lining the renal tubules.
