Hypernephroma Metastatic to the Palatine Tonsils

Abstract: Review of the literature discloses 76 cases of carcinoma metastatic to the palatine tonsil. Of these cases reported or mentioned, 51 were detailed sufficiently or occurred frequently enough to allow analysis. We add two new cases of hypernephroma, and also study the courses of patients with primaries of the stomach, breast, lung and melanoma and seminoma. Bilateral tonsilar involvement is found to be very common in melanoma and not uncommon in seminoma and adenocarcinomas of the stomach and breast. It is uncom… Show more

“…In patients with metastatic tonsillar involvement, lung cancer has been reported as the site of primary disease in 24 cases thus far, with small cell lung cancer being the dominant histology (9). Metastatic involvement of the tonsils is associated with a poor prognosis and survival following the development of tonsillar metastases is approximately 9 months, independent of the histology of the primary tumor (10).…”

“…Our case was a 53-year old male patient with primary ascending colon cancer. Metastatic palatine tonsil cancer is often unilateral, with the left side more commonly involved than the right side [20] . Lymphatic routes have been proposed as the possible pathways of metastatic palatine tonsil cancer from colorectal cancer.…”

“…Tonsillar metastasis can be bilateral or unilateral depending on the nature of the primary neoplasm. The prognosis for patients with tonsillar metastasis is rather poor 6 . In this report, we present a case of a phyllodes tumor that metastasized to the tonsil; we have included the clinical features and pathological findings.…”
