Hyperinsulinemia causes activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis in humans

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Hyperactivity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is frequently found in hyperinsulinemic subjects, such as patients with diabetes or abdominal obesity. Here, the question has been posed as to whether hyperinsulinemia increases HPA secretory activity. METHODS: We performed paired -euglycemic and stepwise hypoglycemic (76 -66 -56 -46 mg=dl) -clamp experiments in two groups (each of 15 healthy men) at different insulin infusions rates, ie, 1.5 mU=min=kg (low-insulin condition) and 15.0 mU… Show more

“…28 (2005) metabolism, may also suppress fat catabolism, and dominance of the fed state may drive insulin secretion, thereby favouring fat deposition. The association of visceral adiposity with hyperinsulinaemia is well recognized, though the exact mechanisms of this relationship are controversial (Bjorntorp 1997;Fruehwald-Schultes 2001;Goran 1997). Furthermore, reduction in skeletal muscle mass may be associated with reduced peripheral insulin sensitivity (Poehlman et al 2000).…”

“…Likewise, serum cortisol levels were higher during the high-or low-insulin condition. Similarly, during the euglycemic clamp, serum cortisol levels slightly increased in the high-insulin condition, while they decreased in the low-insulin condition [37] . In the previous trial, cortisol concentrations have been increased from baseline during hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp experiments in animals and in humans [39] .…”

“…A hiperinsulinemia poderia ter uma influência estimulatória na atividade do eixo HHA. Evidências têm indicado um efeito estimulatório agudo da insulina durante clamp euglicêmico em homens saudáveis (34). Já foi demonstrado que a insulina atravessa a barreira hematoencefálica (35), e a presença de alta densidade de receptores de insulina na hipófise suporta esta idéia (36).…”
