Hypergraph Modeling and Visualisation of Complex Co-occurence Networks

Abstract: Finding inherent or processed links within a dataset allows to discover potential knowledge. The main contribution of this article is to define a global framework that enables optimal knowledge discovery by visually rendering co-occurences (i.e. groups of linked data instances attached to a metadata reference) -either inherently present or processed -from a dataset as facets. Hypergraphs are well suited for modeling co-occurences since they support multi-adicity whereas graphs only support pairwise relationshi… Show more

“…In a publication dataset, typical metadata types are: publication id, title, abstract, authors, affiliations, addresses, author keywords, publication categories, countries, organisations,... 3 There are many different navigation hyperedge possible: for instance choosing as reference the publication ids, the navigation hyperedge is: {authors, author keywords, organisations, country, publication categories}; choosing author keywords as reference the navigation hyperedge is: {authors, organisations, country, publication category, publication ids}.…”

“…Each element s of Σ ρ is mapped to a set of physical references R s = {r : s ∈ A ρ,r } ∈ P (S) in which they appear: we write r ρ the mapping. The multiset of values 3 Metadata of interest for visualisation or referencing are in italic The raw visualisation hb-graph for the facet of type α/ρ attached to the search S is then defined as:…”

“…A multi-adic relationship can be viewed either as a group or a cooccurrence. Also, hypergraphs can be used to model the complex co-occurrence networks induced by the different facets of an information space- [25].…”
