Hyperfine structure measurements of the even electron levels in scandium atom

Abstract: Magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants A for 19 even electron levels have been determined with the use of the method of laser-induced fluorescence in a hollow cathode discharge. In the case of 17 levels, the A constants have been obtained for the first time; in two cases the earlier literature values have been confirmed.

“…The hf constants of odd parity levels of Sc I belonging to the configurations 3d 2 (4p + 5p), 3d4s(4p + 5p), and 4s 2 4p and hf constants of even levels belonging to the configurations 3d4p 2 , 3d 2 (4s + 5s + 4d), 3d 3 , 3d4s(5s + 6s + 4d + 5d), 4s 2 4d have been determined. A total of 199 hf constants of Sc I are determined, and the results are compared with the hf constants determined by [1,13,[15][16][17]21]. All the hf constants agree well within the uncertainty values, except for odd levels 43252 and 44105 cm −1 & for even levels, 36515, 42937, 43597, 44838, and 45870 cm −1 where the hf constants determined in this study differ from the work of others.…”

“…Singh et al [11] and Başar et al [12] used the laser opto-galvanic method to obtain the HFS constants of 20 levels of the 3d 2 4s, 3d4s4p, 3d4s5s, and 3d 2 4p configurations. Using the laser-induced fluorescence method in hollow cathode discharge, Krzykowski & Stefańska measured the magnetic dipole HFS constants A for 19 levels [13]. Fourier transforms (FT) spectroscopy was exploited by Aboussaïd et al [14], Van Deelen [15], Xu et al [16], and Hala & Nave [17] to determine a huge number of HFS constants for Sc I levels.…”

“…In the work of van Deelen [12], synthetic model spectra of Sc I hyperfine structure (HFS) multiplets were constructed and fitted to experimentally measured spectra. The results were compared to similar results from the literature [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23], and investigations were initiated to examine the significant differences more closely. The work of van Deelen [12] can be considered the most recent and accurate compilation of Sc I HFS data for the near infrared wavelength region.…”

“…The hollow-cathode lamp has a similar construction as described in Refs. [18,19]: The cathode is a 2.5 cm long copper cylinder with an inner diameter of 6 mm, covered by a thorium foil on the inner wall, and is cooled by liquid nitrogen. The discharge is operated at a current of 40 mA with argon buffer gas at a pressure between 80 Pa and 100 Pa. A 5 mW laser beam from the 402 nm ECDL, resonant with the 0 3/2 -24874 5/2 transition, is directed through the FIG.…”
