Hypercoagulability and hyperfibrinolysis in patients with melanoma

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether or not, using sensitive analytical methods for the measurement of coagulation and fibrinolysis enzyme activity, there was a hypercoagulable state in patients with melanoma, and whether differences existed between those with or without metastases. Seventy-one patients were studied, 45 with localized tumors (stages Ia and Ib) and 26 with metastases (stages II-IV). Plasma level of activated factor VII, prothrombin fragment 1 + 2, thrombin-antithrombin complex, fib… Show more

“…High levels of circulating biomarkers resembling activated coagulation and fibrinolytic systems such as fibrinogen (F), fibrin(ogen) split products and DD have been associated with decreased survival for several tumor types in previous studies [11][12][13]. Researches on melanoma patients examining the relationship between activated hemostatic system and prognosis have yielded similar results [14][15][16]. Sufficient evidence of such an advantage has not been found for cancer patients in general.…”

“…In a series of coagulation markers tested, only the fibrinogen ␣-chain was significantly increased in gastric cancer, and it was correlated with tumor T, N, and M stages (38 ). Similarly, the fibrinogen ␣-chain peptide has been found to be significantly increased in melanoma (39 ). In a clinical trial of chemotherapy, treatment with mopidamol was associated with a statistically significant prolongation of survival in patients with lung cancer, an effect correlated with the reduction in mean plasma fibrinogen concentration (40 ).…”

“…A case of internal jugular vein thrombosis associated with metastatic papillary carcinoma of the thyroid has been reported, 86 and an hypercoagulable state has been described in patients with melanoma. 8 The literature reports a case of internal carotid occlusion associated with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.…”
