“…25 In preclinical studies, streptozocin was reported to be emetogenic in dogs, with vomiting occurring 45 to 90 minutes after administration. 21 In the present study, dogs developed mild, moderate, or severe vomiting after 18 of 58 (31%) streptozocin treatments, and 1 dog was withdrawn from treatment by its owners because of severe vomiting after each treatment. The high incidence of vomiting after streptozocin treatment occurred despite pretreatment with butorphanol.…”

“…Streptozocin appears to be directly cytotoxic to pancreatic beta cells in dogs and humans. In preclinical studies, 9,21 the prominent postmortem lesion in diabetic dogs given a single dose of streptozocin (1,500 mg/m 2 , IV) was marked degeneration or virtual absence of islet tissue from sections of pancreas. Acute hypoglycemia attributed to damage to the islet cells was seen 20 to 24 hours after infusion of 1,600 mg/m 2 to healthy dogs.…”

“…In some experiments, Sprague-Dawley rats were given a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ; 55 mg/kg). Previous studies have shown that within 5 days, the rats are only hyperglycemic without any hyperlipidemia or kidney injury (5,11), which is a good model for type 1 diabetes mellitus. With the use of this STZ rat model, experiments were performed on day 5 after the STZ injection.…”
