Hyperbola–parabola primary mirror in Cassegrain optical antenna to improve transmission efficiency

Abstract: An optical model with a hyperbola-parabola primary mirror added in the Cassegrain optical antenna, which can effectively improve the transmission efficiency, is proposed in this paper. The optimum parameters of a hyperbola-parabola primary mirror and a secondary mirror for the optical antenna system have been designed and analyzed in detail. The parabola-hyperbola primary structure optical antenna is obtained to improve the transmission efficiency of 10.60% in theory, and the simulation efficiency changed 9.35… Show more

“…Furthermore, the removal of the secondary mirror benefits not only the integration but also thoroughly avoids the energy loss (about 25%) caused by the central obstruction of the secondary mirror. Thus, the transmission efficiency can be remarkably improved without designing intricate optical antennae [10,11].…”

“…In recent years, Cassegrain antenna with simple structure and easy manufacturing has been widely studied in Free-space optical communication [1][2][3][4], but the transmission efficiency is reduced due to the energy loss caused by the reflection of secondary reflector of Cassegrain antenna [5,6]. In order to improve the transmission efficiency of antenna, some researchers have designed off-axis antennas [7], while others have chosen to optimize the primary and secondary mirrors [8][9][10]. But they also have the disadvantage of complex surface processing.…”
