Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Alleviates Oxidative Stress and Tissue Injury in Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats

Abstract: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has been shown to attenuate renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats, when applied in the early reperfusion period. The aim of this study was to elucidate possible beneficial effects of HBO therapy on renal I/R injury, when applied 24 h after ischemia. Rats were randomized into three groups: (1) control group (n ¼ 20), (2) I/R group (n ¼ 20), and (3) I/R þ HBO group (n ¼ 20). Renal I/R injury was created by interrupting renal blood flow for 30 min with a non-traumatic vas… Show more

“…Another study found that HBOT reduced neutrophil infiltration after ischemia reperfusion injury and also limited lipid peroxidation by increasing antioxidant enzymes. Although the exact mechanisms of HBOT renal benefits were not clear, the authors speculated that the beneficial effects of HBOT were mediated via inhibiting neutrophil infiltration [19]. …”

“…However, HBO has been shown to decrease lipid peroxidation in a number of studies (8,18,22). A study by Ilhan et al determined that HBO therapy attenuated MDA levels by increasing SOD and GPx activities in rats with renal ischemia reperfusion (6). In recent years, diverse oxidant species can be measured totally and lipid peroxidation activities have been analyzed by evaluating TOS (23).…”

“…HBO therapy involves the intermittent inhalation of 100% oxygen at a pressure higher than 1 standard atmospheric pressure (6). This therapy enhances the dissolved oxygen concentration in arterial blood and restores the diffusion of oxygen into poorly perfused tissues (6,7). Animal studies have shown that HBO therapy attenuates ischemia reperfusion-induced tissue injury by abating oxidative stress, suppressing inflammation, increasing nitric oxide formation and preventing apoptosis (7)(8)(9).…”

“…14 On the other hand, experimental studies conducted by our group and others have shown that HBO therapy alleviates renal injury induced by chemotherapy, ischemia/ reperfusion (I/R) injury, and sepsis. 10,[15][16][17] Furthermore, Ayvaz et al reported that HBO therapy (2.5 ATA 90 min, for 2 days) had a protective effect in an experimental MARF model in rats. 9 Therefore, further studies to elucidate the potential protective role of HBO therapy in MARF are warranted.…”
