Hyperbaric Oxygen Preconditioning Upregulates Heme OxyGenase-1 and Anti-Apoptotic Bcl-2 Protein Expression in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats with Induced Postischemic Acute Kidney Injury

Abstract: Renal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury is the most common cause of acute kidney injury (AKI). Pathogenesis of postischemic AKI involves hemodynamic changes, oxidative stress, inflammation process, calcium ion overloading, apoptosis and necrosis. Up to date, therapeutic approaches to treat AKI are extremely limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) preconditioning on citoprotective enzyme, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), pro-apoptotic Bax and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 … Show more

“…Additionally, apocynin treatment and HBO preconditioning, single or combined, decreased the NGAL tubular expression, which should be considered as beneficial effect of these protocols on the course of induced postischemic AKI. These results are in a line with improved histological and morphological parameters of renal tissues obtained after APO treatment and HBO preconditioning in previous studies [ 47 , 52 ].…”

“…Hmox1 was induced by various stimuli that increase oxidative stress and was a homeostatic enzyme that is upregulated in response to stress [34]. It has been shown that increased expression of Hmox1 was one of the main protective mechanisms after post-ischemic acute kidney injury (AKI) in Wistar rats [35]. The antioxidant and protective role of Hmox1 in myocardial IRI has been con rmed [36].…”

“…The production of antioxidant enzymes that scavenge free radicals in ischemic tissue is then impaired, thereby exacerbating the damage caused by these free radicals in the post ischemic reperfusion tissue. However, free radical scavenging by superoxide dismutase (SOD) protects against IRI ( Huang et al, 2021 ; Ostojic et al, 2021 ).…”
