Hyperbaric Oxygen Preconditioning Alleviates Myocardial Ischemic Injury in Rats

Abstract: It has been shown that after ischemia-reperfusion, application of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) reduces cardiac injury. In this study we tested the hypothesis that HBO preconditioning reduces injury to the ischemic myocardium. One hundred and eight adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (250-280 g) were randomly divided into four groups: normoxia + sham surgery (CS), normoxia + permanent occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery (CMI), HBO preconditioning + sham surgery (HS), and HBO preconditioning + … Show more

“…Expression of these genes can provide insights into the metabolic state of the tissue under different physiological conditions (Hooper and Hooper 2009;Hooper et al 2014). Evidence that HBOT can condition tissues to promote function and survival comes from the study of rat models of myocardial infarction (Han et al 2008;Sun et al 2011) and cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury (Li et al 2008(Li et al , 2009Cheng et al 2011), as well as a mouse model of repeated UV-A skin exposure (Fuller et al 2013). Whether or not HBOT can be used therapeutically in selected patient populations to alleviate tissue damage arising from chronic inflammation and oxidative stress remains to be determined.…”

“…The animal model employed presently was established by occlusion of the anterior descending proximal artery (Han et al, 2008). Briefly, the rat was anaesthetized with Xylazine 8 mg kgG 1 and Ketamine at 100 mg kgG 1 , administered intraperitoneally.…”

“…The extent of this increase is in function of the number of exposures, the time of exposure and the levels of ATA (Simsek et al, 2011;Sheikh et al, 2000). In studies with a rat model of coronary heart disease, previous HBO treatment followed by myocardial infarction resulted in a reduction in the extent of heart tissue damage and a shorter recovery time (Han et al, 2008). This suggests the possible efficacy of HBO therapy to prevent AMI or reduce the damage to heart tissue of individuals who suffer this event.…”

“…19 Han et al showed that HBO preconditioning decreased infarct size and improved heart function in rat myocardial infarction. 20 In addition, Yogaratnam et al demonstrated that HBO preconditioning before coronary artery bypass graft surgery decreased myocardial damage, intraoperative blood loss, ICU length of stay, and postoperative complications. 21 Interestingly, in an experimental study, HBO therapy results in an otoprotection effect against Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.…”
