Polyamines, including putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm), are polycationic compounds of low molecular weight that are widely distributed in living organisms. They are implicated in a variety of plant processes, such as floral and fruit development. In addition, correlation between polyamines and flower gender or fertility is reported in some plant species. Since polyamines, especially Spd and Spm share a common precursor, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), with ethylene, they demonstrated competitive effects on functions in fruit development and ripening in many plants. Exogenous polyamines have been employed to regulate floral and fruit development and ripening in a lot of plants. Besides, polyamines have shown their potential for postharvest fruit management. Therefore, in this review, we focused on the involvement of polyamines in floral and fruit development along with perspectives of polyamine research.

O at phytoalexins, avenanthram ides, occur as constitutive com ponents in seeds. The am ounts of each av en an th ram id e w ere analyzed. The com position of av en an th ram id es in dry seeds was d ifferent from th at in elicitor-treated leaves. In seeds, av en an th ram id e C was most ab u n d an t w ith an am o u n t tw o tim es larger than th at of aven an th ram id e A o r B. O n the o th er h and , av en an th ram id e A was the m ajor com ponent in elicitor-treated leaves. The total am ount of av en an th ram id es in seeds increased 2.5 tim es during im bibition for 48 h although the com position did n o t change. The hydroxycinnam oyl-C oA :hydroxyanthranilate /V-hydroxycinnam oyltransferase (H H T, E C 2.3.1.-) activity, which is responsible for th e final co n d en sation step in th e av en an th ram id e biosynthesis, was detected in dry seeds. T he activity was localized in e n d o sp erm and scutellum , and slightly increased during 48-h im bibition. The enzym e was partially purified by anion exchange chrom atography from b o th dry seeds and elicitor-treated leaves. TTie activity was separated into two peaks by chrom atography, indicat ing th at H H T consists of at least tw o isoforms. The substrate specificities o f H H T isoform s from seeds w ere differen t from each other.

The levels of free putrescine, spermidine, and spermine, and the activities of ornithine decarboxylase and s-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase were determined in the floral organs of the normal and a male sterile stamenless-2 (sl-2/sl-2) mutant of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Under the intermediate temperature regime, all mutant floral organs possessed significantly higher levels of polyamines and enzyme activities than their normal counterparts. In the low temperature-reverted mutant stamens, the polyamine levels and the activity of PA biosynthetic enzymes were not significantly different from the normal. It is suggested that the abnormal stamen development in the sl-2/sI-2 mutant is, in part, related to elevated levels of endogenous PAs.The diamine putrescine and the PAs3 Spd and Spm are probably of ubiquitous occurrence in plants and appear to play an important role in plant growth and development (6,10,29,30). Changes in PA levels and activities of PA biosynthetic enzymes have been implicated in a variety of plant growth processes such as breaking of dormancy (2), seed germination (31), fruit development (5, 28), somatic embryogenesis (7), pollen embryogenesis (13), adventitious root formation (9), delay of senescence (1), and adaptation to stress (10).The PAs also appear to be involved in the flowering processes of plants, i.e. the induction of flowering (4,12)
