Hydrothermal Synthesis of Various Shape-Controlled Europium Hydroxides

Abstract: Eu(OH)3 with various shape-controlled morphologies and size, such as plate, rod, tube, prism and nanoparticles was successfully synthesized through simple hydrothermal reactions. The products were characterized by XRD (X-Ray Powder Diffraction), FE-SEM (Field Emission- Scanning Electron Microscopy) and TG (Thermogravimetry). The influence of the initial pH value of the starting solution and reaction temperature on the crystalline phase and morphology of the hydrothermal products was investigated. A possible fo… Show more

“…One other notable characteristic of disordered structures is that they may also alter the crystal nucleation and growth processes [1,2,11]. Hence, from this perspective, the control of these crystal features is achieved by suppressing the growth of the crystal face by selectively adsorbing an additive to a specific face [255,[270][271][272][273][274][275]. In addition, the suppression of the aggregation of nuclei can also be controlled by adding a dispersant/thickener or by controlling the pH of the solution.…”

“…Perovskites, garnets, spinels and lately also oxyhydroxides doped with rare-earth (RE) elements have been drawing large attention due to their optical properties, by which these compounds can be widely used in medicine and industry, e.g. as scintillators, luminophores and photovoltaic materials [1][2][3][4][5]. One of the many beneficial features of these materials is that they are very efficient in absorbing light and use less material to capture the same amount of energy when compared to conventional solar absorbers.…”

“…Fundamental studies based on parametric optimisation analyses correlating hydrothermal media selection, solvent pH, the chemical stability of the target crystalline phase, and precursor reactivity, among other things, are essential to determine the feasible morphological tuning of NPs to be prepared under hydrothermal conditions. Zheng et al [6] applied this methodology for synthesising Eu(OH) 3 submicron particles and nanoparticles. Eu(OH) 3 was chemically stable in the pH range of 7.26-12; in acidic conditions, the dominating phase was Eu 2 (OH) 5 NO 3 •2H 2 O in the Eu 2 O 3 -NO 3 -NH 4 OH-H 2 O system.…”
