Hydrothermal synthesis of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite–graphene nanosheet on Ti-6Al-7Nb: mechanical and in vitro corrosion performance

Abstract: The hybrid coatings containing the graphene nano-sheet (GNS) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) phases have been successfully synthesized on Ti6Al7Nb alloys by a one-step hydrothermal method. The hydrothermal reaction was carried out for 24 h at 200 °C. The GNS ratio has been altered as 1, 3, 5 and 7 wt.% in the coatings and, the results have compared with non- GNS containing coatings. The effect of the GNS ratio on the microstructure, hardness, and in vitro corrosion responses has been investigated in detail. The … Show more

“…The peaks at 873.26 and 410 (weak) cm -1 correspond to P − O symmetric stretching. All the spectrum stretching modes for OH − , CO 3 2− and PO 4 3− groups succinctly conform with previous results [39], hence indicating that HAp has carbonated-apatite structure.…”

“…The phase of the crystal-synthesized was most of Ca2P2O7 (β-TCP) with diffraction peaks of HAp. The peaks observed at 2θ values of 27.53 and 31.83 o were in accordance with that of bulk HAp crystals (Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) card number: 9-432), confirmed exactly to the previous bone-derived HAp XRD image [39]. “…Plasma spraying is the standard technique used for this purpose [31], but its disadvantages such as the formation of amorphous phases due to high process temperatures, the difficulty of coating geometrically complex metal supports and the costs [32,33] have led to the development of alternative coating methods. Examples include the sol-gel and sol-gel dip coating method [24,34,35], the hydrothermal process [36,37], RF-magnetron sputtering [38], micro-arc oxidation [39], pulsed laser deposition [40], hot isostatic pressing [41], biomimetic deposition [42], highvelocity suspension flame spraying [43], gas detonation deposition [44], electrophoretic deposition [45], and electrochemical deposition [46,47].…”

“…However, these porous surfaces lack nano-scale structures. Various micro–nano-structures on titanium implant surfaces by femtosecond laser, plasma spraying, and micro-milling with chemical treatment have previously been constructed . However, for zirconia implants, methods are relatively limited.…”
