Hydrothermal Synthesis of Fine MoS2 Crystals from Na2MoO4 and KSCN

Abstract: A fine crystal MoS2 has been synthesized by hydrothermal method in a clean and efficient system consisting of Na2MoO4 and KSCN in a short time (24 h). The product is characterized by XRD and TEM, and the ED pattern reveals a hexagonal crystal. The mechanism of this reaction is also put forward. Thus this method provides us a new routine to synthesize other transition metal sulfides.

“…To date, various methods were put forward to prepare MoS 2 including thermal decomposition [19], hydrothermal or solvothermal synthesis [20,21], electronbeam irradiation activation [22], sonochemical process [23], and template synthesis [24] with different molybdenum sources such as: Na 2 MoO 4 , (NH 4 ) 6 [25,26,27,28]. Among the above approaches, many types of MoS 2 micro/nano materials with various morphologies, such as inorganic fullerene-like and nanotubes, nanorods, nanowires, nanosheets, nanoflowers were obtained.…”

“…At a certain temperature and pressure, the two pre-formed complexes decompose to release dissociative metal ions, and at the same time SCN À ions hydrolyze to produce S 2À ions. Moreover, as a reducing reagent [22], SCN À can reduce Cu 2þ to Cu þ during the reaction process. Then, the produced S 2À reacts with free In 3þ to form (InS 2 ) À dissolved in solution.…”
