Hydrothermal synthesis of cotton-based BiVO4/Ag composite for photocatalytic degradation of C.I. Reactive Black 5

Abstract: BiVO4/Ag/cotton-K composite material exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and recyclability, and the photodegradation mechanism of RB5 by BiVO4/Ag/cotton-K was also proposed.

“…These four peaks can also be recognized in the XRD pattern of cotton-RGO-AgNP composite fiber (green curve). In addition, five more sharp diffraction peaks appear at 38.2 • , 44.3 • , 64.5 • , 77.5 • and 81.5 • in this pattern, perfectly coinciding with the XRD peaks of elemental silver nanoparticles (blue curve), which belong to the crystallographic planes of (111), ( 200), ( 220), (311) and (222) for face-centered cubic silver (JCPDS: 65-2871), respectively [23,24]. It is well known that RGO has a typical peak at~24 • and there is indeed a wide and weak XRD peak at 23.5 • for the purchased RGO powder (red curve) [24,25].…”

“…XRD characterizations were first implemented to find out the crystal textures of corresponding materials. Commercial pristine cotton yarn consists of polymer chains of cellulose, which is arranged into a certain crystalline phase, thus rendering XRD peaks centered at 14.8 • , 16.7 • , 22.9 • and 34.3 • (black curve in Figure 2) [22,23]. These four peaks can also be recognized in the XRD pattern of cotton-RGO-AgNP composite fiber (green curve).…”

“…The fabrication of BiVO 4 was prepared with reference to our previous work [ 42 ]. The synthetic precursor solution, with a pH of 7, contained Bi(NO 3 ) 3 (2.911 g), EDTA-2Na (2.500 g), and HNO 3 (10 mL); then, the NaVO 3 (0.732 g) solution was dropped under stirring conditions.…”

“…However, due to the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron and holes, pure BiVO 4 shows low photocatalytic efficiency as well as low recyclability. Therefore, loading BiVO 4 on conductive flexible materials has become a research hotspot, such as: M‐BiVO 4 /WO 3 /ITO‐Mica, [16] FTO‐BiVO 4 , [17] Ag/BiVO 4 /Cotton‐K, [18] Co 3 O 4 ‐BiVO 4 /g‐C 3 N 4 , [19] BiVO 4 /BiPO 4 /GO, [20] BiVO 4 ‐GO‐TiO 2 ‐PaNI [21] and BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 @rGO [22]…”
