Hydrothermal growth of VO2 nanoplate thermochromic films on glass with high visible transmittance

Abstract: The preparation of thermochromic vanadium dioxide (VO2) films in an economical way is of interest to realizing the application of smart windows. Here, we reported a successful preparation of self-assembly VO2 nanoplate films on TiO2-buffered glass by a facile hydrothermal process. The VO2 films composed of triangle-shaped plates standing on substrates exhibit a self-generated porous structure, which favors the transmission of solar light. The porosity of films is easily controlled by changing the concentration… Show more

“…A novel polymorph of VO 2 (C) was prepared by dehydrate of the layered VO 2 hydrate . In addition, VO 2 film can also be prepared on TiO 2 /glass substrate by hydrothermal and followed fast heat treatment (400 °C, 60 s), and the T lum and Δ T sol of this film can reach 70.3%, 9.3%, respectively . By the same method, the phase and thickness of VO 2 film can be controlled simply via changing precursor concentration and reaction time .…”

“…Recently, the most widely studied thermochromic material is monoclinic (M) phased VO 2 , which can initiate an automatic reversible semiconductor–metal phase transition (SMT) at ≈68 °C ( T c ) . Thermochromic VO 2 coatings have been fabricated by a variety of techniques including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), pulsed laser deposition (PLD), and magnetron sputtering (MS), hydrothermal process, sol‐gel method, etc. From an application perspective, it is crucial to develop simple, scalable, and cost‐effective techniques that allow to obtain smart coatings with high optical performance.…”

“…A variety of physical and chemical strategies, such as, atomic layer deposition, 18 sol-gel, 19 ion implantation technique, 20 chemical vapor deposition, 21 pulsed laser deposition, 22 magnetron sputtering 23,24 and solution-based synthesis 25 have been developed to fabricate VO 2 nanostructures. Among them, the solution-based method gained increasing attention because of the simple preparation process and low cost.…”
