Hydrothermal Carbonization of Argan Nut Shell: Functional Mesoporous Carbon with Excellent Performance in the Adsorption of Bisphenol A and Diuron

Abstract: Hydrochar derived from Argan nut shell (ANS) was synthesized and applied to remove bisphenol A (BPA) and diuron. The results indicated that the hydrochar prepared at 200 °C (HTC@ANS-200) possessed a higher specific surface area (42 m 2 /g) than hydrochar (HTC@ANS-180) prepared at 180 °C (17 m 2 /g). The hydrochars exhibited spherical particles, which are rich in functional groups. The HTC@ANS-200 exhibited high adsorption efficiency, of about 92% of the BPA removal and 95% of diuron removal. The maximum Langmu… Show more

“…RH and RB exhibited hysteresis in their respective isotherms, which is a clear indication of the presence of mesopores 36 , 37 . However, surface area, pore diameter, and pore volume of RH were found to increase marginally after HTC, when RH was converted into RB.…”

“…Mostly, the possible mechanisms for the adsorption of organic pollutants on carbon materials are an electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bond formation, n-p interaction, p-p interaction, and pores lling. 85,87,88 The FTIR pattern of ketoprofen loaded PCLD@NaOH and aspirin loaded PCLD@NaOH shows that the peaks around 3451, 1732, and 1492 cm À1 are slightly shied from their initial location to 3367, 1741, and 1476 cm À1 , respectively (Fig. 7).…”

“…To envisage the regeneration of PCLD@NaOH, ethanol was used to desorb aspirin and ketoprofen from PCLD@NaOH. 85,86 The reusability of the PCLD@NaOH was determined using 5 cycles of adsorption-regeneration. A sample of 20 mg of PCLD@NaOH was shaken with 100 mL solution of aspirin and ketoprofen (150 mg L À1 ) for 2 h at room temperature.…”

“…Among the samples that were analyzed, hydrochar and activated carbon produced from HTC at 250 °C for 12 hours showed the highest performance, which is consistent with the CV results. Increasing the temperature and duration of HTC leads to the formation of micrometric structures [29,35], thereby improving ORR catalytic activity.…”
