The layered double hydroxides, known as anionic clays and represented by the general formula [M 2+ 1-x M 3+ x (OH) 2 ] x+ A mx/m •nH 2 O, are a group of materials which are of much interest currently. They present a variety of potential applications as adsorbents, catalysts and catalyst support, ion-exchangers, antacids and as a polymer stabilizer. It is possible to obtain a broad variety of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), depending on the identity and ratio of the cations M 2+ and M 3+ , as well as the interlamelar anion. The aim of this review is to give out some information about this class of materials, concerning to the synthesis, characterization, properties and applications.

“…14 In the human health field, 15 the interest in LDH has focused on intercalation of organic molecules into the interlayer spaces. 23 The use as a solid base catalyst includes aldol reactions, 24 Knoevenagel condensation, 25 transesterification reactions, 26 biodiesel production, 27 Baeyer-Villiger oxidation, 28 oxidation of benzyl halides, 29 Friedel-Crafts reaction, 30 alkylation of diketones, 31 and epoxidation of olefins. 17 On the other hand, hydrotalcites have been used as solid base catalysts in several organic reactions.…”
Michael addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to nitrostyrenes is efficiently promoted by hydrotalcite [Mg-Al] to afford the respective g-nitrodicarbonyl adducts. Differently, the addition of Meldrum's acid leads to a direct access of g-nitroesters through a one pot domino process. GABA derivatives (+/À)-phenibut and (+/À)-baclofen were readily synthesized from the respective nitro adducts.
“…Recently, it has been found that basic hydroxyl groups of the hydrotalcite, assisted by H 2 O 2 , acts as a catalyst to form a perhydroxyl anion species (HOO − ), in similar way that basic OH − groups [21][22][23][24], which in turn nucleophilically attacks the nitrile, to generate peroxycarboximidic acid, which is an active intermediate oxidant in the epoxidation of olefins [25][26][27][28][29]. Hydrotalcites are very attractive for this type of oxidation reaction because of their ability to give Lewis type acid-base bifunctional catalysts or basic catalysts with Brönsted type sites, proceeding from the mixed oxide and the meixnerite-like structures, respectively [30].…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
