Hydrosoluble copolymers of acrylamide‐(2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonic acid). Synthesis and characterization by spectroscopy and viscometry

Abstract: Hydrosoluble copolymers containing sulfonic acid groups incorporated into a macromolecule were synthesized. The group of polymers studied was obtained by free radical solution polymerization, using potassium persulfate as an initiator. The copolymerization of the monomers 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AA) was carried out at different pH values of the reaction medium of the monomer mix. The copolymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H N… Show more

“…The weak absorption band at 1,180 cm -1 can be attributed to SO 2 stretching vibrations, which also confirms the grafting of ATBS onto the alkyd resin. It is worth noting that the effectiveness of the reaction between the monomers can be confirmed by the absence of the characteristic band of vinyl monomers, due to C=C at 978 cm -1 [10,11].…”

“…It is a relatively strong acid that has broad applications, which include packaging films, foam stabilizers, photographic materials and water absorbents. The shielding effect produced from the unique geminal dimethyl structure of ATBS offers excellent hydrolytic stability to newly synthesized polymer resins [9][10][11][12][13]. Figure 1 illustrates the structure of ATBS, and Table 1 lists its technical parameters.…”

“…AMPS has attracted much research interests including synthetic fiber, petroleum industry, water treatment, paper making, and coating because of its thermal and antihydrolytic stability. The sulfonic acidic monomer AMPS has been used to synthesize various copolymers with conventional monomers, such as acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM), etc [1][2][3]. As reported, polyepoxysuccinic acid (MA-AMPS) and the mixture of MA-AMPS and imidazoline all have good scale inhibiting ability to CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 in oilfields [4].…”
