Hydroseeding with mesotrione in tankmix for establishment of perennial ryegrass

Abstract: Mesotrione (2-[4-(methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzoyl]-1,3-cyclohexanedione) is a proven effective weed control product in agricultural and turf settings but its use within a hydroseeding mixture has not been investigated. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of (1) mesotrione rate and (2) duration of herbicide exposure on turf establishment and weed populations through hydroseeding establishment methodology. The experimental design of both studies was a randomized complete block, incorporating a … Show more

“…(Figure 4). Although phytotoxicity or turf injury from mesotrione applied at rates comparable with the current study manifest inconsistently in perennial ryegrass and other cool‐season turfgrasses (Beam et al., 2006; Jones & Christians, 2007; McElroy & Breeden, 2007; Pease & Stier, 2020), chlorophyll a and b , β‐carotene, lutein, and violaxanthin concentrations have been shown to decrease in plants treated with mesotrione (McCurdy et al., 2008)…”

“…Mesotrione caused no injury to Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue ( Festuca arundinacea Schreb. ), and perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) in some studies (Beam et al, 2006; Jones & Christians, 2007; Pease & Stier, 2020), mild discoloration of turfgrass foliage in other studies (McElroy & Breeden, 2007; McElroy et al, 2007), and severe white discoloration of tall fescue foliage when plants were treated under high‐humidity conditions (Goddard et al, 2010).
