Human-induced sinkhole collapse can result in drastic changes to landscape aesthetics and present challenges to land managers seeking to determine the plausibility of restoration, the amount of financial investment needed, and the long-term sustainability of tampering with karstic environments. Alteration of groundwater flow in a karstic environment expedited the formation of large sinkholes in the southern end of man-made Victory Lake, causing it to drain immediately. Soon after the lake emptied in 1986, two unsuccessful attempts were made to restore the 13 ha (32 ac) lake. The sinkholes formed in the southern basin were completely in-filled, eliminating 3 ha (8 ac) of lake basin and significantly altering the original lake morphology. Some twenty-seven years later, Victory Lake is holding some water in the shallow basin at the northern end and would primarily be classified as a marshy wetland. This study was initiated to investigate the current relationship between the groundwater and surface water at the lake's altered basin to determine the potential for it to be restored fully or partially as a recreational focal point of the Berry College campus. Over the course of one year we measured the inputs (stream flow and precipitation) and outputs (evaporation and surface water outflow) of the lake system. We were able to conclude that groundwater is not likely contributing to the lake, based on inorganic and stable isotope ( 18 O and 2 H) water chemistry analysis and the deep position of the groundwater table relative to the lake bottom. From the results of dye-tracer tests conducted in the lake, we concluded that basin water may not be escaping downward at measurable rates because of its clay bottom. Our overall water-budget analysis confirms an adequate water volume entering by rainfall and ephemeral stream inflow; nearly 90% of the water leaves Victory Lake through surface-water outflow. Water loss through evapotranspiration during spring and summer months overcomes the gain accomplished during wetter and cooler months, particularly February. Through an investigation of water level records kept for campus monitoring wells from 1998 through 2012 we confirm that the groundwater table has stabilized and the immediate threat of new sinkhole formation is minimal. Restoration of Victory Lake to its original picturesque meeting spot may be possible through creative engineering strategies and project financing. However, we question the longevity of managing a karstic environment and consider the potential risks to infrastructure, groundwater, and human health should lake bottom failure occur again on campus.

Abstract:Lake eutrophication is a large and growing problem in many parts of the world, commonly due to anthropogenic sources of nutrients. Improved quantification of nutrient inputs is required to address this problem, including better determination of exchanges between groundwater and lakes. This first of a two-part review provides a brief history of the evolution of the study of groundwater exchange with lakes, followed by a listing of the most commonly used methods for quantifying this exchange. Rates of exchange between lakes and groundwater compiled from the literature are statistically summarized for both exfiltration (flow from groundwater to a lake) and infiltration (flow from a lake to groundwater), including per cent contribution of groundwater to lake-water budgets. Reported rates of exchange between groundwater and lakes span more than five orders of magnitude. Median exfiltration is 0.74 cm/day, and median infiltration is 0.60 cm/day. Exfiltration ranges from near 0% to 94% of input terms in lake-water budgets, and infiltration ranges from near 0% to 91% of loss terms. Median values for exfiltration and infiltration as percentages of input and loss terms of lake-water budgets are 25% and 35%, respectively. Quantification of the groundwater term is somewhat method dependent, indicating that calculating the groundwater component with multiple methods can provide a better understanding of the accuracy of estimates. The importance of exfiltration to a lake budget ranges widely for lakes less than about 100 ha in area but generally decreases with increasing lake area, particularly for lakes that exceed 100 ha in area. No such relation is evident for lakes where infiltration occurs, perhaps because of the smaller sample size.

Using geographic information system and topographic maps, 5829 headwater streams in Florida were surveyed for several parameters including elevation, stream length, flow regime and surrounding geology, and vegetation. Each was assigned to one of four headwater types: wetland, seep, lake, and spring. Wetland headwaters were the most common and widespread followed by seeps, many displaying temporary flow, while springs were perennial and least numerous. Four groups of Florida rivers were identified through cluster analysis of drainage densities (number headwaters/km of river length). Group 1 consisted of six rivers with lowest drainage densities (0.30-1.39 streams/km main channel). All were coastal rivers of peninsular Florida and, with one exception, drain to the Gulf of Mexico. Seven of eight rivers (group 2) with intermediate drainage densities (1.77-3.04 streams/km main channel) were located in peninsular Florida. Only three of 12 rivers comprising the two groups (groups 3 and 4) with greatest drainage densities (5. 16-9.37 and 15.49-16.96 streams/km main channel) were not located in the Florida panhandle. Stream conservation efforts should focus on both highly complex dendritic river networks of the panhandle and on the 7000 km 2 area in central Florida mostly lacking headwaters that may become a significant dispersal bottleneck for aquatic biota seeking refugia farther north from projected climate change.
