Hydrographic conditions driving sardine and anchovy populations in a land-locked sea

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to establish a relationship between long-term variability in sardine and anchovy populations in the Adriatic Sea and ocean dynamics and processes that occur over interannual and decadal timescales in the Adriatic-Ionian basin. Basis for such analysis are annual time series of sardine and anchovy landings and recruits at age 0 and annual time series of environmental parameters observed at a representative Adriatic station between 1975 and 2010. Pearson correlations and robust Dynamic Fa… Show more

“…These decadal oscillations affect Adriatic biogeochemical properties 22 , 23 and even fisheries 24 . However, coastal regions, particularly the shallow northern Adriatic, are also characterized by strong freshwater influx (Po River, average discharge of about 1500 m 3 /s) 25 .…”

“…A few studies dealing with the feeding ecology of the sardine in the Adriatic Sea determined copepods and decapod larvae as its most desirable prey items (Tirelli et al, 2006;Zorica et al, 2016). Interannual fluctuations in Adriatic sardine population biomass and recruitment have been observed (Vilibić et al, 2016). Sardine traditionally represents an important commercial resource in the Adriatic Sea, especially in Croatian waters, where it is mainly targeted by purse seine fisheries.…”

“…Over the last few decades, abundance of the anchovy population in the Adriatic and worldwide has been highly variable (Lluch-Belda et al ., 1989; Chavez et al ., 2003; Vilibić et al ., 2016). Those variations might be linked not only to the growing anchovy fisheries industry (Cingolani et al ., 1996; Mustać, 2014), but also to the fact that its reproduction traits and recruitment success are environmentally driven (Agostini & Bakun, 2002; Santojanni et al ., 2006; Zorica et al ., 2013).…”
