Hydrogeophysical investigation of aquifer parameters and seawater intrusion: a case study from Eastern Mitidja plain, Algeria

Abstract: The rapid depletion of surface water due to climate change increases the world's water demand. As a result, groundwater resources are rapidly emerging as the primary source of freshwater supply for various needs. However, overexploitation and inadequate management of these resources can lead to irreversible contamination of freshwater reservoirs. Effective groundwater resource management depends on a detailed understanding of hydrogeological parameters that control the complex functioning of aquifers. However,… Show more

“…Groundwater aquifers are facing challenges related to seawater intrusion, due to climate change and anthropogenic activities. The quantity and quality of groundwater resources are being impacted by surface water depletion, rising temperatures, and sea level rise [1][2][3]. In the face of our changing climate, the delicate balance between freshwater and the encroaching sea has become a critical concern for coastal communities and environmental stewards worldwide [4].…”

“…Alao et al conducted research using ASSM to evaluate groundwater vulnerability to surface contamination and identify a groundwater promising zone and its protective capacity, thereby enhancing water security and addressing related issues [7]. [8] conducted geophysical studies to locate groundwater aquifers in arid regions, while [9,10] utilized an integrated geophysical approach to uncover saltwater intrusion in specific areas of Lagos State, Southwestern Nigeria, and the Eastern Mitidja Plain in Algeria, respectively. In a separate study, [11] utilized surface geoelectrical techniques to delineate salinewater intrusion in the Jahanian Area of Pakistan.…”
