Coastal karst aquifers are dynamic hydrogeological systems with substantial hydrological, geomorphological and ecological impacts on the marine and coastal karst ecosystems, mostly induced by the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). This paper presents complex hydrogeological settings of the Rovanjska-Modrič coastal karst region on the eastern Adriatic coast characterized by: (1) high temporal and spatial variations in seawater properties; (2) significantly reshaped coastal bottom morphology, and (3) plethora of associated biocenoses from fresh water, brackish, marine and cave assemblages. With the aim of resolving spatiotemporal interconnections of SGD and marine environment changes, we conducted field prospection and seasonal measurements of different water properties on-and off-shore. Obtained results pointed to: (1) the composite recharge system consisting of numerous sinking rivers in the distant hinterland (with different climate settings) and local precipitation input; (2) specific discharge settings highly governed by a complicated karst conduits network, the hydrological situation in the hinterland and local meteorological conditions, i.e. one system that permanently feeds coastal and probably submarine springs, while the other operates periodically; (3) disturbed winter isothermy and threelayered summer stratification of the seawater column, and (4) slightly changed trophic settings. All of that is the consequence of extreme heterogeneity of the coastal karst aquifer, characteristic for the eastern Adriatic coast.

Brackish karst springs are common along every karstic sea shore consisting of limestone and dolomite. On the Croatian sea coast there are more than 300 permanent or temporary brackish karst springs. From the standpoint of water supply, the problem of karst spring water salinization is quite significant because large quantities of high quality fresh water are not available to be used either as drinking water or for industrial and agricultural purposes. The salinity of brackish karst springs situated along the Adriatic coast varies from 10 to more than 18 000 mg Cl Y 1 with an unfavourable distribution during the year. In the wet winter period, when water quantities in the region are abundant, the salinity is exceedingly low. In the warm and dry summer period the chloride concentration is high. At that season, when a shortage of fresh water in the region occurs, especially due to tourism, karst spring water is so salty that it cannot be used at all. The mechanism of sea water intrusion is relatively well known but the problem of karst springs desalinization has not been solved in practice. The Ghyben-Herzberg relationship is formulated exclusively on the basis of hydrostatic equilibrium, and its use under dynamic conditions is limited. The dynamics of fresh water circulation towards karst spring exits are very specific for each individual spring. Using numerous hydrological, hydrometric, hydrogeological and speleological investigations of the brackish Blaz (Croatia) karst spring, this paper gives the plausible position and dimensions of the main karst conduits through which sea water penetrates into the spring exit.Pénétration de l'eau de mer dans les sources karstiques côtières: exemple de la source de Blaz (Croatie) Résumé Des sources karstiques saumâtres apparaissent le long de toute côte calcaire ou dolomitique karstique. Le long de la côte croate de l'Adriatique il y a plus de 300 sources karstiques pérennes ou temporaires. La salinité des sources karstique représente de plus en plus un important problème pour l'alimentation en eau. De grandes quantités d'eau douce ne peuvent être utilisées ni pour la production d'eau potable, ni à aucun usage industriel ou agricole. La salinité des sources karstiques saumâtres le long de la côte croate varie de 10 à 18 000 mg Cl" 1 et même plus, avec une répartition annuelle très défavorable. Pendant l'hiver humide, alors que la région dispose d'eau douce en abondance, la salinité de ces sources est très faible et l'eau en est potable. Pendant l'été chaud et sec, la teneur en chlorures est élevée et l'eau n'est plus propre à la consommation alors que la demande en eau douce (surtout due au tourisme) est la plus grande. Les mécanismes de pénétration de l'eau de mer dans les sources karstiques sont relativement bien connus, mais le problème de leur protection contre cette pénétration n'est pas résolu sur un plan pratique.
