In the study, health risk assessment on heavy metals ingestion was presented through the groundwater drinking pathway for residents in an oil and gas producing area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The level of the ground water pollution was examined, the quality of the borehole and the well water was assessed and the quality of the ground water pathway for the resident in the oil and gas producing area was determined and compared with the national and international standards for the drinking water. This study adopted both the field and laboratory experimental analysis of physical and chemical parameters. Water samples were analyzed for Physico-chemical parameters following acceptable methods to determine the compliance, and the results were analyzed according to drinking water guidelines. Interestingly, the results show that the ground water contained high amounts of turbidity (21.5 NTU, 23.00 NTU and 19.0 NTU in the borehole water and well water), iron (5.3 mg/L in the ground water and 6.98 mg/L in the borehole water) and pHs of all water samples were acidic in the study area. These results show that ground waters including the borehole and the well waters of the study area had acquired reasonable levels of pollution. Climate change and population growth around Mt. Meru experienced lower availability of water for domestic and agricultural uses. Reduction in quantity of water is compounded by lack of information on water quality which could lead to undesired health risks and agricultural effects when such water is used for irrigation. Thus, major ions from 54 different water types (springs, streams, dug wells, boreholes, and lakes) were used to assess hydrogeochemical characteristics and suitability of water for domestic and agricultural purposes. Results showed dominance of the major cation and anion in the order of Na + > K + > Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ and HCO 3 − > CO 3 2− > Cl − > SO 4 2− > NO 3 − > F − , respectively. It is revealed that Mt. Meru is the recharge zone. Geology, water-rock interaction time, and climatic conditions control water chemistry. Major freshwater aquifers were found to be fractured mafic volcanics, breccia, and tuff. Lahars, due to their susceptibility to weathering, were found to host groundwater of low quality. The suitability of water for domestic and irrigation purposes was moderate, in order of lakes < dug wells < boreholes < streams < springs. Fluoride was found to be the major natural contaminant affecting water quality for domestic purposes with mean value of 17.6 mg/L, while elevated Na + (mean = 118 mg/L), K + (mean = 59 mg/L) and HCO 3 − (mean = 390 mg/L) relative to other ions were found to affect water quality for irrigation purposes. In some few cases, anthropogenic pollutions were recognized through NO 3 − and Cl − .

A groundwater quality assessment has been carried out in northeast part of Anbar governorate in western Iraq. We analyzed hydrochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids presence of ions to describe groundwater quality. The study area has the only confined aquifer within the geological formation extended in area. Values of groundwater hydrochemical parameters were ranged from (7) to (7.9) for ph, (1599) to (6800) µmhos/cm for electrical conductivity (EC) and (1048) to (4446) mg/l for total dissolved solids (TDS). The origins and types of groundwater in the area were of marine origin and MgCl2 water type while only (6) samples were of continental origin and Na2SO4 water type. Groundwater utilization indicated that it can't be used for drinking purposes, while few groundwater wells can be used for agricultural and (33) groundwater samples can be used for animal purposes. However, the nature of the soil in the area and the depth of the groundwater qualified water for agricultural uses in significant and wide ranges.
