Hydrogen sulfide induces human colon cancer cell proliferation: Role of Akt, ERK and p21

Abstract: H(2)S (hydrogen sulfide), regarded as the third gaseous transmitter, is implicated in ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancers. The present study investigates the effects of H(2)S on cell proliferation in human colon cancer HCT 116 cells and SW480 cells. We identified the two key enzymes, CBS and CSE, for H(2)S synthesis in HCT 116 cells. An exogenously administered H(2)S donor NaHS induced cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner, with optimal proliferative concentration at 200 micromol/l. NaHS… Show more

“…In recent years, more and more attention is paid to H 2 S for its extensive physiological and pathophysiological properties on cancer progresses. Some findings from in vivo and in vitro studies showed that H 2 S is beneficial for cancer cell growth, proliferation, migration and invasion (24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30), owing to its vascular relaxant and angiogenesis effects. H 2 S promotes the supply of nutrients and blood to the tumor cells and tissues (24).…”

“…Until now, investigations in cancer research have mainly focused on the effects of H 2 S on proliferation and survival of cancer cells (8)(9)(10)(11). However, controversial results exist, as evidenced by the reported increased (8) or decreased (9) proliferation of colon cancer cells following NaHS treatment.…”

“…However, controversial results exist, as evidenced by the reported increased (8) or decreased (9) proliferation of colon cancer cells following NaHS treatment. A study showed that H 2 S derived from NaHS may confer intrinsic radioresistant properties to cancer cells (12).…”

“…Studies indicate that administer of exogenous NaHS or production of endogenous H 2 S induce the proliferation of human colon cancer HCT116 cells and human hepatocellular carcinoma cells [8][9][10].…”
