Hydrogen Peroxide and Ultraviolet Irradiations in Water Treatment

Abstract: Trihalomethanes (THMs) the by-products of chlorination in water treatment are recognised as a threat to public health due to their carcinogenicity. The photodegradation of THMs using hydrogen peroxide has been found to give increased removal efficiency and the outcome of the study may find, its application in designing a unit process for water treatment. Batch experiments were carried out using UV lamp of 83 W and 40% w/w Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in test waters between 2.5-10 pH range of chloroform, bromod… Show more

“…3a removal of 80 % of chloroform was achieved in 90 min. The literature states that no removal of chloroform can be obtained with low pressure UV lamps (Nicole et al, 1991) but with high pressure lamps, some chloroform removal can be achieved (Rudra et al, 2005). Thus both medium and high pressure UV lamps are to some extent able to remove chloroform due to their polychromatic light emissions.…”

“…13,14 In addition, terrorism has recently made direct use of peroxides by implementing peroxide-based materials in home-made explosives, a popular trend among terrorists due to synthetic simplicity and ease of availability of chemicals. 15 High concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the environment 16,17 from its use in industry, 18 in atomic power stations 19 and in disinfecting agents 20 can dramatically affect the environment which warrants the detection of residual hydrogen peroxide.…”

“…In the present study, hydrogen peroxide was no able to exert its microbiocidal effect under pond condition while its influence was evident under aquarium condition. This is probably related to fact that the function of hydrogen peroxide is largely dependent on physico-chemical condition of water e.g., temperature, pH, and presence of other catalyzers in the pond water (Rudra et al 2005). In the cases of zeolite treatment, however, bacterial load showed little or no change during the study period under both aquarium and pond condition (Fig.…”
