Hydrogen Isotopic Substitution Studies of the 2165 Wavenumber (4.62 Micron) “XCN” Feature Produced by Ion Bombardment

Abstract: The interstellar 4.62 km absorption band, commonly seen toward embedded protostellar objects, has not yet been unambiguously identiÐed ; here we report new results which further elucidate the components of the band carrier, which is often referred to in the literature as the "" XCN ÏÏ band due to previous implications of carbon and nitrogen. If the atmosphere of the early Earth was not overly reducing, as some studies indicate, production of prebiotic molecules containing the cyanogen bond would have been diff… Show more

“…In all photolysis warm-up experiments this band disappears quickly above 250 K (dÏHendecourt et al 1986 ; Allamandola et al 1988 ;Bernstein et al 1995). A thorough discussion of this feature is presented in Demyk et al (1998), Pendleton et al (1999), Palumbo et al (2000aPalumbo et al ( , 2000b, and Bernstein et al (2000).…”

“…In this way, surface chemistry experiments (Collings et al 2003;Watanabe & Kouchi 2002a;Watanabe et al 2003), UV photolysis (Gerakines et al 1996;Watanabe & Kouchi 2002b) and ion irradiation (radiolysis, e.g., Hudson & Moore 1999Palumbo & Strazzulla 1993;Palumbo et al 2000;Baragiola et al 2003) give us information about the basic processes of ice mantle formation, adsorption, diffusion, desorption and reaction pathways.…”

“…Experimental studies using isotopic substitution proved unequivocally that the carrier of the laboratory feature is OCN − (Schutte & Greenberg 1997;Bernstein et al 2000;Novozamsky et al 2001;Palumbo et al 2000). Despite this assigment, alternative identifications of the interstellar feature are still debated (Pendleton et al 1999).…”
