Hydrogen Concentration in Dual‐Phase (DP) and Quenched and Partitioned (Q&P) Advanced High‐Strength Steels (AHSS) under Simulated Service Conditions Compared with Cathodic Charging Conditions

Abstract: The hydrogen permeation through dual‐phase (DP) and quenched and partitioned (Q&P) advanced high‐strength steels (AHSS) is investigated under simulated auto service conditions. The hydrogen concentration in the steels under simulated auto service corrosion in 3 wt% NaCl solution (either at the free corrosion potential or if polarized to the potential of a galvanized steel surface) is lower than that at the least negative cathodic charging potential of −1.100 VHg/HgO in 0.1 M NaOH. Crevice corrosion introdu… Show more

“…The fact that all the tested steels (excepted for 950TW-A-L0.072 and 950TW-A-L0.0072) displayed ductile fracture indicated essentially no hydrogen influence on the as-received steels. This is consistent with the previous results that there was less than 0.002 µg g -1 of diffusible hydrogen in the as-received DP and Q&P steels [37].…”

“…Liu et al [36,37] measured the amount of hydrogen in some DP, Q&P and TWIP steels under the laboratory conditions studied by Venezuela et al [34]. They found a hydrogen concentration of 0.02 to 0.04 g g -1 for the steels immersed in 3 wt% NaCl at the free corrosion potential, and 0.1 to 0.2 g g -1 for the steels immersed in 3 wt% NaCl and polarised to the free corrosion potential of zinc.…”

“…The theoretical curve for a diffusion transient is given by [4,5,15,[18][19][20]22,123,136,137]: Figure 4. A succession of hydrogen permeation transients were measured with increasing and decreasing hydrogen fugacity, by charging at various potentials in 0.1 M NaOH solution, for pure Fe hydrogen pre-charged at −1.500 V Ag/AgCl in 0.1 M NaOH solution for 48 h to achieve steady state surface conditions on the input side.…”

“…Figure 1 illustrates the permeation cell [4,86], which is widely used [19,20,22,23,[117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134], and was used in this research project. Hydrogen is produced by the applied cathodic potential on the left hand side of the specimen, by the electrochemical cell on the left hand side of the specimen.…”
