“…Thiosulfate shows versatile crystal chemical behavior . Thiosulfate may crystallize as a discrete anion, as in MgS 2 O 3 ·6H 2 O, or ligand where coordination to the metal cation may be through S, , as in NaAgS 2 O 3 ·H 2 O and Na 3 Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ·2H 2 O, or through both S and O atoms as in Ni[SC(NH 2 ) 2 )] 4 S 2 O 3 ·H 2 O. The S−S bond length in thiosulfate varies depending on the nature of bonding to the adjacent cation: in BaS 2 O 3 ·H 2 O, where thiosulfate is a discrete anion, the S−S bond distance is 1.96 Å; by contrast, with a S−S distance of 2.07 Å in Na 3 [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ]·2H 2 O, bonding to Au occurs through the outer sulfur …”

“…Besides SrS 2 O 3 , crystal structure determinations for three further alkaline-earth thiosulfates have been reported, all of them as hydrates: BaS 2 O 3 ÁH 2 O Manojlović-Muir, 1975), CaS 2 O 3 Á6H 2 O (Held & Bohatý, 2004), and MgS 2 O 3 Á6H 2 O Baggio et al, 1969;Elerman et al, 1982Elerman et al, ,1983. Together with the known Sr compounds, SrS 2 O 3 Á5H 2 O (Held & Bohatý, 2004) and the new monohydrate, the trend of incorporating smaller amounts of water into stable crystal structures with increasing cation radius is obvious for alkaline-earth metal thiosulfates.…”
