Hydrogel tapes for fault-tolerant strong wet adhesion

Abstract: Fast and strong bio-adhesives are in high demand for many biomedical applications, including closing wounds in surgeries, fixing implantable devices, and haemostasis. However, most strong bio-adhesives rely on the instant formation of irreversible covalent crosslinks to provide strong surface binding. Repositioning misplaced adhesives during surgical operations may cause severe secondary damage to tissues. Here, we report hydrogel tapes that can form strong physical interactions with tissues in seconds and gra… Show more

“…Neither of these two types can perfectly integrate tough adhesion and reusability due to their intrinsic drawbacks. Temporary elastomer adhesives can directly adhere to the solid surfaces through reversible interactions, as exemplified by Van der Waals interaction, [ 25 ] hydrogen bonding, [ 26 ] hydrophobic interaction, [ 27 ] reversible covalent bonds, [ 28 , 29 ] and polymer entanglements, [ 30 ] etc. Such adhesives usually show rapid, immediate, and repeatable adhesion, whereas the adhesion toughness is low because of limited hysteresis of the bulk during interfacial separation.…”

“…Figure 3E showed 10 tensilerelaxation cycles at 100% strain. The tensile strength decreased after the first tensile cycle due to the inevitable viscosity of the polymer matrix and some permanently broken chemical bonds (Liu et al, 2021;Xue et al, 2021). The subsequent coincident tensile cycles, indicating that the reversible bond fracture and recombination had high repeatability and stability.…”

“…In water and marine environments, adhesives are indispensable for specific applications such as underwater repair, soft underwater robotics, underwater communication, biomedicine, and tissue repair. [ 1–6 ] However, the adhesive joints on dry surfaces generally become less efficient in high‐moisture environments. The adhesion degrades because solid–solid adhesion generated by permanent and reversible interactions is significantly reduced when a hydration layer is formed on the surfaces.…”
