The TiO2-based nanotubes (TNTs, B–TNTs) of different surface acidities and their supported Rh catalysts were designed and synthesized. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), tempera–ture–programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3–TPD), atomic emission spectrometer (ICP), and Brunauer–Emmett–Tellerv (BET) surface-area analyzers. Images of SEM and TEM showed that the boron-decorated TiO2 nanotubes (B–TNTs) had a perfect multiwalled tubular structure; their length was up to hundreds of nanometers and inner diameter was about 7 nm. The results of NH3-TPD analyses showed that B–TNTs had a stronger acid site compared with TNTs. For Rh/TNTs and Rh/B–TNTs, Rh nanoparticles highly dispersed on B–TNTs were about 2.79 nm in average diameter and much smaller than those on TNTs, which were about 4.94 nm. The catalytic performances of catalysts for the hydroformylation of 2-methyl-3-butennitrile (2M3BN) were also evaluated, and results showed that the existence of B in Rh/B–TNTs had a great influence on the catalytic performance of the catalysts. The Rh/B–TNTs displayed higher catalytic activity, selectivity for aldehydes, and stability than the Rh/TNTs.

Hydroformylation of olefins, as a study of olefinic downstream derivative production, is of great relevance in chemical production. Heterogeneous hydroformylation is beneficial for catalyst separation and recycling compared to homogeneous systems. Cobalt is a cheap metal with excellent catalytic activity in hydroformylation as well as the precious metal rhodium. Therefore, the research on cobalt-based catalysts for heterogeneous hydroformylation has great value and significance. The nano or atomic structures of cobalt-based catalysts have significant impact on the catalytic behaviors of the hydroformylation process. There is rarely the design principles report on how to achieve significant improvement in hydroformylation performance by regulating the structure of the cobalt-based catalyst. Herein, we review the recent research progress on heterogeneous hydroformylation by cobalt-based catalysts with different metal sizes (from nanostructures to single atoms). On the basis of the difference in the catalytic mechanism between homogeneous and heterogeneous hydroformylation, we summarize and propose the regulation principles to enhance the activity and stability of cobalt-based catalysts in hydroformylation, where single-atom engineering is expected to achieve unity of high activity and stability of cobalt-based catalysts for hydroformylation applications. At the end of this review, we present an outlook on the opportunities and challenges in developing cobalt-based catalysts for heterogeneous hydroformylation.

BACKGROUND: As indirect liquefaction of coal has been carried out in megaton scale, extension of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products has received renewed interest. Hydroformylation provides a way for the transformation of alkenes to aldehydes. Homogeneous rhodium complex catalysts are efficacious but expensive and not easy to recover and reuse. Heterogeneous catalysts are desired to enable their easy separation. Amorphous four-component non-precious metal catalysts were prepared using facile reduction and their activity toward hydroformylation of long linear ⊍ olefins was investigated.RESULTS: Obtained Co-Ni-P-B presented uniform nanoparticles that were well-dispersed Co with more electrons, attributing to isolation and electron transfer among the four components. The Co, Ni, P, and B were in both atomic states and oxidation states. The Co in Co-Ni-P-B was shown to be electron-enriched with enhanced catalytic activity. Co-Ni-P-B displayed good catalytic activity for hydroformylation of linear C 6 , C 8 , C 10 , or C 12 ⊍ olefins, and the highest activity for 1-octene. The conversion of 1-octene and the selectivity of C 9 aldehydes reached 99.62% and 96.30%, respectively. The ratio of nonanal to isononanal was 1.44. The selectivity for isomeric products was 3.70%. There existed an appropriate four-component ratio for hydroformylation of 1-octene owing to synergistic effects among the Co, Ni, P, and B. Co-Ni-P-B exhibited good reusability.CONCLUSION: Amorphous four-component Co-Ni-P-B prepared by facile reduction showed good catalytic performance toward hydroformylation of long linear C 6 , C 8 , C 10 , or C 12 ⊍ olefins due to synergistic effects among the Co, Ni, P, and B.
