Hydrodynamic interactions in rod suspensions with orientational ordering

Abstract: The effect of hydrodynamic interactions on the diffusion of rods in the nematic phase is studied, both experimentally by time-resolved fluorescence video microscopy and theoretically by mesoscalehydrodynamics simulations. The aspect ratio of the rods and the relative importance of hydrodynamic interactions-compared to direct interactions-are varied independently. This is achieved in experiments by using charged rod-like viruses (fd-virus) with varying ionic strength, both for the wildtype virus and viruses coa… Show more

“…The same observation has been made for apoferritin by Gapinski et al 51 Only for very high volume fractions the situation might be inversed since then the hydrodynamic interactions dominate the behavior. 52 Regarding the Soret coefficient, in general, an increase of the ionic strength decreases the value of S T , although increasing temperature and fd-Y21M concentration makes the differences smaller.…”

“…In literature, only few studies where dynamical phenomena are tracked at the scale of the individual anisotropic particles are known. Sofar, the most versatile rodlike model systems have been the filamentous bacteriophages fd-wt [12,[15][16][17]. These biological rods have an aspect ratio larger than 100, and each virus is essentially identical to each other in diameter and contour length, allowing for the formation of the smectic phase [13].…”

“…Hence, we ignore hydrodynamic interactions that might be important. 26 We use the final state of a relaxed system obtained from a NPT molecular dynamics simulation at a given pressure as the initial state for a BD simulation at a particle density corresponding to that pressure. This way we make certain that the systems are relaxed at the given densities.…”

“…The discrepancy might be due to the small aspect ratio of our particles compared to that of fd virus or the impact of hydrodynamic interactions that we ignore completely. 26 …”
