Hydrodesulphurization of Thiophene over Co, Mo and CoMo /g-Al2O3 Catalysts

Abstract: The hydrodesulphurization (HDS) of thiophene was performed on monometallic catalysts Co/g -Al2O3, Mo/g -Al2O3 and bimetallic CoMo/g -Al2O3. Experiments were carried out on a fixed bed catalytic reactor at 175-300C, 30-60 atm, thiophene volume hourly space velocities of 1h-1- 4h-1 and molar ratio hydrogen/thiophene of 60/1. The thiophene conversion on the bimetallic CoMo/g -Al2O3 catalyst was higher than on Co/g -Al2O3 or Mo/g -Al2O3.

“…The XRD diffractogram (Figure 3) show the characteristic peaks of alumina and MoCo confirming the presence of CoMoOx, the crystalline molybdenum oxide and nichel oxide. The X-Ray pattern shows peaks at 2theta = 36.7°; 45.5° and 66.8 ° which are related to crystal phase of γ-Al 2 O 3 [22][23]. As depicted in the SEM images ( Figure 4), the active phases were well distributed on the alumina surface.…”

“…The CoMo hydrodesulphurization catalyst was prepared by incipient wetness co-impregnation of the γ-Al 2 O 3 support and it has the characteristics demonstrated in our previous work [13]. Chemical composition, textural characteristics and total acidity are presented in table 1.…”

“…The main problem for developing green diesel technologies is the limited number of non-food triglyceride sources of fatty acids [8].Hydrotreatment reactions are extremely exothermic, their control being extremely important. These reactions have been usually applied to remove heteroatoms such as sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen from various oil fractions and occur in the presence of metal and acid catalytic centers [9][10][11][12]. Impurities from animal oils or fats, high reaction temperature, insufficient control of the reaction temperature or too little hydrogen in the reactor can lead to unwanted side reactions, such as cracking, polymerization, ketonization, cyclization and aromatization and deposition of coke on the catalyst.Hydroconversion results from several competing reactions, such as decarboxylation [13], decarbonylation [14-16] and hydrodeoxygenation [17].Snare et al [18] used oleic acid, linoleic acid and methyl oleate as model compounds in vegetable oil, for hydroconversion on a semi-continuous reactor, using a 5% Pd / C catalyst, resulting in high selectivity and high yields in hydrocarbons.…”
